OT......Watering Can Repair

Know this WAY off topic, but could use some advice. My wife purchased a vintage galvanized steel watering can at a yard sale. Due to its age a small part of the bottom seam is cracked and of course leaks. What's the easiest way to fix??? Melt lead???, weld??? Ideas are appreciated!!! THANKS!

Hi WC,

When soldering galvanized, use cut muratic acid. Cut acid is made from pouring some muratic acid into a glass bowl then dropping in a few galvanized chips. Let the acid stop boiling then it's ready to use.

Muratic acid, also called battery acid or pool acid, is 40% Sulfuric acid. Lab grade sulfuric acid is 70% acid.

Most cans are made with a rolled hem seam. After awhile this seam will become loose and leak. Spread on a liberal amount of acid then use a 95/5 tin solder for domestic use.

Dot not use a open flame for a solder heat source. Heat a piece of copper then use the copper as the heat source. Using a open flame will add carbon to the galvanize causing the solder not to seal.

T bone, not sure if it makes any difference but muriatic acid is actually hydrochloric acid. In concentrated form it's still bad stuff, but not near as bad as concentrated sulfuric acid.

If functionality is your main concern, just use JB Weld--I've fixed several this way.

Clean it real good and solder it with some lead acid solder.

I would add one step -- fashion a patch out of brass shim stock to cover crack, tin, then solder.
