I have bunch of Tecumseh small engine carbs with plugged idle passages, soaking doesn't usually work

they plugged drillings with hard steel bb, using a dremel with fine point, I got bb out of the hole but they also pressed a fixed metering rod into the passage, this rod prevents cleaning of the passage so its either purchase a new carb or live with lousy mixture and no idle

has anybody had success cleaning these or getting that rod out??

I've had good luck cleaning gummed-up carburetors with lacquer thinner. Most of the passages in a Tecumseh carb can be cleared out with a piece of fine wire. I use monel fishing leader, because I happen to have some on hand.

Ask the guys over at the Forum at PERR.COM. There's some SHARP Tecumseh guys over there!

It has been suggested to boil the carbs in water with powdered TIDE detergent added. I how done this with SOME success. Another thing I have done is to remove ALL plastic or rubber parts and throttle and choke shafts and bake the carb body in an oven for several hours. This chars the goop and turns it to powder, so it can be blown out with shop air.

Do this at your own risk! Determining the temperature the parts can stand and the baking time is up to you! The alternative is a new carb, anyway, so it may be worth a try!

The bad thing with Tecumseh carbs are that they have an coating on them, and if you use a harsh cleaner on them, you can melt/clean this coating and then the carb can suck air through the poursity of the aluminum casting.

once you figure out how to use it, pretty good site

ordered carb manual, have the engine manual but kinda skimpy on the carbs

boiling in Tide sure looks like possible good alternative to tossing these carbs

thanks

The best carb cleaning solvent I've found is HOPPES NO.9 powder solvent that is intended for cleaning gun barrels. If the carb is mounted on a engine that will start and run use two tbl spoons to one gallon of gas and run it thru the carb. If the carb is not on the engine take the carb apart and soak it in straight #9.

A few safety considerations
1. Avoid breathing in alot of fumes from the #9.
2. Wear rubber gloves while handling the stuff.
3. Prolonged exposure to #9 will dissolve brass so dont soak parts for several days it can cause damage.

It can also disolve the sealer on the carb body and lead to air leaks through the aluminun casting, so be careful about that. Tecumseh has said for years NOT to soak their carbs in commercial carb cleaner, only use spray cleaner
