Can't even use

Off topic here but just read an article in our Farmers Exchange about the DOT rules we farmers are exempt from. The biggest one I am trying to check out is the fuel issue. I have always been told that we had to run the green taxed fuel but the article which was taken from a Purdue University article said we could use the red untaxed fuel. So before running the red stuff I am trying to find out the truth. Anyone know for absolute sure? Would save a bundle for all of us. Thanks for any help. Oh, I can't seem to open the link for the Purdue article but will post it for ya'll to read if for yourself.

If it"s got license plates and on the road the fuel better be green when they dip the tanks, if you have a truck you never drive on the road and decide to run red off road fuel in it make sure you take the plates off of it, had a guy last summer that had the dot come on his property to look at some trucks and he had a dumptruck they just used on the farm with expired plates on it and were using off road fuel in it, because it had plates expired or not they got fined, wasn"t a cheep one if I remember right.

Do you guys care if I tag along on this question? I know all about the red and green diesel, but is there such a thing as farm gas? All of my stuff it to old to be diesel and I get tired of filling 5 gal gas cans all the time.

Just unleaded gas Paul, your suppler will have the forms you can fill out and get a refund on the state tax each year. You can do the 5 gal cans too. for any off road gas. The federal tax can be deducted from your income tax. Just tell your tax preparer how many gal of gas and oil you bought during the year.

Can't, Just remember, DSL...Cars, pickup trucks, big trucks Things that are primarily used on the highway needs "Green" Taxed DSL Fuel.
Tractors, combines, spray buggies, dozers, ditchers, wheel loaders, etc, etc Things that are primarily used OFF-Road can use "Red" non-taxed DSL Fuel. To buy Non-taxes fuel here in Texas, You need to contact the Controlers Office and get an application fill it out, send it in and you will recieve a certificate with your # on it. Keep original on file at home. Take a copy to the Fuel jobbers in your area that you do biz with. They will maintain a file with your copy in it. Then just pick up the phone and order a load when you need or pull you nurse tank to their facility to fill there.
Probably not a lot different in your State, as far as the certification process goes. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Yep, here in Nebraska I was stopped at a road check last spring and got the fuel checked on my dually- have farm plates on it. Heard of guys getting their grain hauling straight trucks checked too on their way from their farms to the elevator. Basically, around here- if it needs liscence plates to be driven on the highway, it's gotta have the highway fuel.

As far as the dyed fuel goes, under NO circumstances use red fuel in an "on-road" vehicle. A local farmer (Pa) ran out of fuel in his road tractor and so to get home he syphoned 5-10 gal. of red fuel out of the loader he was hauling. 3-4 mos., a set of filters and many tanks of fuel later he was fuel checked and streaks of dye showed. He ended up replacing all the injectors, fuel lines, the pump had to be taken apart and cleaned, as well as the tanks had to removed to be cleaned However he just replaced them with bigger junkyard tanks.

My little brother works for the diesel shop that did the work on his truck. Before starting they called around to find the best way to clean out the system. Everybody had the same answer....REPLACE, replace, replace. Once the stuff is in the system its almost impossible to get out!

Wanna hear a funny one? I got stopped and my tanks dipped - on my harley - over 400 miles from the nearest farm. Only have a 250 mile range. Just where did they think I got off road fuel from? Brought it from home in a jerry can? Oh yeah, off road gas here is dyed purple.
