Removing tank cleanout plugs?

Anyone here have some good tips on removing cleanout plugs from an air tank? Just picked up this nice little 20 compressor tank at the local dump. Only problem is, I can't get the thing open to check the inside. Plugs are about 2" in diameter and may have been coated with pipe dope. So far, I've used wrenches with persuader pipes, penetrating oil, and liberal hammering.

It's starting to look like the tank's winning the battle of wills.

Thanks.

Hi John;
After applying heat, penetrating oil and tapping
the plug with a small hammer (to vibrate and loosen the joint),I've had sucess with a socket
(from a 3/4 " drive) , a 1/2 " adapter and impact gun.

Good Luck
Kam

You didn't mention the word 'heat' so I'll assume that you haven't tried it. Even a little propane plumbers torch applied should expand things enough to get the plug out. The plug is probably cast iron and the threaded portion that it goes into is probably just mild steel so they should expand at different rates of expansion and this should be enough to free the threads. Let us know how you make out.

Reputable manufacturers specify the plugs to be steel. They are usually installed with a "large" impact wrench and they are difficult to remove, usually takes a 3/4 inch air tool minimum.
