Timing Question

I figured out today that I could hook up my 12 volt timing light to a 12 volt battery and to the #1 plug wire on my 6 volt John Deere model 320 and set my timing using the light. The "spark" line shows up real good with the light when the engine is running. The problem is that the setting changes with engine speed. What's the best way to do this?
Thanks in advance! Tugboat

Tugboat, I am a Case tractor person and haven't worked on a JD since the late 60's, however, I believe the principles are much the same. I set all non electronic controlled engines with the old inductive flash timing light. The timing mark moves as the engine RPM increases because the flyweights in the distributor are advancing the spark to compensate, I.E. my Case 311B timing is set @ 4 degs BTDC @ 500 rpm (idle) and the flyweights advance it to 26 degs BTDC @ 1875 RPM (full speed-no load). Get a manual and double check, some J.D.'s are timed at fast idle! Not at slow idle.

Set the timing at idle. The distributor will automatically advance the timing at higher RPMs
