Hey T-Bone,

Like years ago, I have to start splitting some older hermetic compressors, replace the Klixons, change-out the oils to older stuff. I forget what welding rods we used to re-weld the POT.

We did a lot of repairing of hermetic Copelands over in Australia when we couldn't get new ones during bad weather days. We had motors, just no offshore metal parts such as valves. So, we used to make them.

Any how, your help would be appreciated.

Thanks...jOHN,pa

PS: do you know of any of the old "can-openers" that might still linger in some barns?

Hi John,

Well John, I never welded a pot but it's nothing to get shook up about. Any of the 6010, 6011, 6013, 7018, 7014 or 7024 electrodes would be a good choice in 3/32". Just make sure you preclean the area well and keep the slag out. Grind your stops about 1/2" back before restarting another rod. You will need to use a Co2 or nitrogen purge while welding.

Tig would also be a good choice but slower.

Manual Mig would not be a good choice as cold lap would be a problem.

I never could find a parts source to repair the compressors as well I found a couple good wholesale houses that sold to me cheap enough that it wasn't cost effective rebuilding compressors under 7tons.

Even with the Copeland compressors I couldn't buy parts and with my rebuild labor come out cheaper than factory new compressors.

I seen in the 70's in one of my parts catologs that advertised can cutters but I can't remember which and those catolgs are long gone.

Most of the Klixon overloads were mounted external on the electrical feed pins or mounted to the side of the can with a spring clip on the smaller BTU compressors.

We are starting to find the compressors made in MEXICO are, from time to time, mounted on the TRENTON(tm) racks. I advised COPELAND(tm) of the situation of the compressors being manufactured with NO oil in them, from time to time. Just discovered one. You know what that means having metal throughout the new system.

as a rule, we are warranting new units for 5 yrs. I will probably go broke not charging for the replacement compressors after COPELAND's(tm) first year. The label on the pot says,"made in USA, however, once inside, all of the parts say MaDE in MEXICO with Copelands (tm)part numbers on the pieces. All I needed was a KLIXON (tm) to avoid scrapping all that good copper. I have an aftermarket (off-shore) outfit who claim to have parts for both TpCO and Copelands from 1-7 ton.

I guess I will let TRENTON(tm) worry about the OEM situation. I recommended to them to specify TPCO's,even though I am a stockholder with EMERSON(tm)

Thanks again...John,PA

PS: The farmer wants toknow...what happens when his warranty is up? I replied, (DON'T KNOW). Under the current EPA regulations I guess he should find a buyer.
