Try using glass beads. I use them and have good luck with them. They break when they hit the medal. This way you do not have pitts in the medal when you go to paint.

Haven't done it but the typical advice is to hold the nozzle at an angle to the surface; close to flat. This "chisels" the paint/rust off without acting like a million little ball peen hammers.

I use my pressure feed blaster set to about 60psi( the lowest it will work at).It is just a cheap model from Northern Hydraulics. I use a 6hp 60 gal two cylinder compressor. Hold nozzel as far away as possible for it to work and move as fast as possible. Don't stop and hold the nozzel at any one place, it can warp the metal. If there is any paint left use a sander instead of a second pass with the blaster.
