'77 chevy 20 pickup left front caliper not releasing. The vehicle sat for a year or so, then it was driven about 20 miles at 25-35 mph, but when it was run up to 60-65 on the highway, the left front wheel started smoking. When jacked up the brake caliper would not release. The left caliper was replaced with a rebuilt unit, but the problem remains. In either case of old or new caliper, opening the bleeder valve would let the piston retract. The right side is ok. Clean fluid flows out for bleeding. If it's the valve in the master cylinder, it should affect both front wheels, right? The vehicle has a proportioning valve which may also be a combination valve. Can that valve cause one caliper to lock up but not the other????

We were always told, replace the hose when replacing a caliper. Stuff breaks loose and acts as a check valve on the return flow.

Slowpoke, all answers are dead on, and the hose on the right, and the one at the rear axle were born on the same day as your bad hose.

I have dealt with 2 rubber brake lines that were clogged, swelled shut, whatever just in the past year. If you have any doubts about the hose, remove it, and thread a steel wire in from one end, and see if there is an obstruction, just to satisfy your curiosity, before replacing it.

My bet is on the rubber brake line going to your caliper. I agree with the others that answered you. I just went through the same thing on a Chrysler New Yorker in that the passenger side would wear the pads fast and the car felt like it had a slight drag. The hose "looked" good, and after I replaced it with a new one, I cut into the old one and it was deteriated badly on the inside. It would let me apply the brakes, but would not allow the pads to retract.

I ran into something like this a few years ago
when I got my Unimog. Turned out to be the rubber
brake line was blocked or swollen closed. The
fluid only is forced one way and the brake won't
release. It happened to every rubber line on my
Unimog. Might be your problem, check it out.
