I bought a set of metric combination wrenches in the early 80's. They are marked Craftsman and made in Japan, which worried me when I bought them. Remember the expression "Japanese Junk"? However they have worked fine--I never broke any of them, so I haven't needed to test the guarantee. I prefer to buy Made in the USA products, because I think it helps our economy. But unfortunately Made in the USA does not guarantee that the product will be the best quality. That is why the last several cars I have owned have been Made in Japan. My troubles with a 78 Caprice and an 80 Volare' convinced me that there must be something better out there, and the Japanese cars have delivered, being almost trouble free. I have bought some cheap tools that were made in China and Tiawan. Some of them have been just great for what I use them for, some have been pretty junky. But to buy a similar Made in the USA tool would have cost several times as much, and I probably would have just done without that particular tool. When I have bought used tools, I usually look for USA models, as I have found that most of the foreign tools people get rid of aren't worth having. I wish that Made in the USA still meant the highest quality at a competative price, but unfortunately these days, I am afraid it doesn't. SAD...
