I have always had a few chipmunks in the past years but this summer I am overrun with them. They are destroying my yard, eating my garden, pluging my downspouts with leaves and seeds, getting in garage and chewing things up, heck I even have to fish them out of the pool! I have shot a few but will never catch up that way. Is there a good way to rid my place of these bushy tailed rats and what can I do to make my property less apealing to future chipmunk families? Thanks in advance!

Dad takes a rat trap and glues sunflower seeds to the trigger with white glue. He gets 20-40 a year.
What happens is city people havaheart trap them and bring 'em out to "the country" where country people have trouble with 'em.

MAC has the best idea. A few active outdoor cats around the place keeps a lot of the little critters down. Mine stayed outside all the time. They are fine all year long as long as they have a place to get out of the rain and wind. No feeding except for the occasional leftovers, no litter box, no chipmunk cadavers, no traps to maintain, no poison. They even keep woodchucks away. Only cost is to spay/neuter, and rabies vaccination. One downside is that they do take songbirds. The last one died this winter and there has been a noticeable increase in the chipmunk/mouse/vole situation, so I will need to replace them soon.

Get yourself a few mean old barn cats. They will change the chippies minds real quick about where they roost. Works every time.

Bushy tailed rats is the answer. Feed them rat poison!

Dbone has the right idea! Dad used the same method for keeping rats outta the barn. They think they're getting an easy meal, but fall through the grain and drown.

I used to think "Chip" and "Dale" were cute too until they destroyed everything around here! I use two rat traps baited with jelly beans. I squish the bean a little to let the scent out. Been known to get three chipmunks in a day with one jelly bean!

First it was ants, finally got those things under control, now guess what damned chipmunks, went to Lowe's and bought a Havaheart trap day before yesterday, baited it with peanut butter and got one yesterday cant wait till I get home and see if I got one again today.
I guess I'm a little tender hearted I just could'nt kill that cute little devil, took him about 5 miles out in the country and turned him loose, took out of there like a scalded dog.

A friend at work has a similar problem. He uses a 5 gallon bucket 1/2 full of water, he then pours sunflower seeds on top of the water until they cover the surface. Said he already got rid of over 40 so far this year, he has caught up to 5 in one bucket in a day. Good luck.

I thought they were cute little fellas until they got into my phone wires and chewed thru my doorsill

it will take you a while but I have had very good luck with live trapping, get a bunch of small (maybe even tiny) havahart traps, trigger on big traps needs more weight than they have

bait them with the cheapest creamy peanut butter you can find and check them often

If I watch the traps, I can usually catch 4 per day in 2 traps

you can release them good distance away, at least 5 miles or accross a river from you

some meanies drown them in a rain barrel but I don't have a rain barrel
