Got an old complete coleman that has a painted fuel tank, noticed its brass underneath, thinking of stripping it, shining up the stem, polishing the porceline top,put new mantles and just look at it and not use it.My question is were these originally painted or was the brass tank the factory finsh.Any thoughts? Dan

Look at this site. Pictures of more models than I ever thought existed. At the bottom are links to many additional pictures. Looks like most brass models were nickel plated. But some were not.

Are you sure it's a Coleman Brand?Date of Mfg is die stamped on tank bottom of many Colemans.Single or double mantle?I have several common red Colemans going back to the 1940s and all are steel tanks with baked on paint finish.I would suspect brass plating for anti corrosion over solid brass but lemmee do a little research and get back here.

Hi JoeK, yes its a single, Coleman is stamped on the tank,I have a 2nd one just like it but that one has a chrome tank, single mantle stem(brass). The double mantle coleman that is green porcelin and chrome tank (3rd one) has a patent date on the brass stem of 1920.So where does the brass tank fit in.Thanks.Dan
