I'm getting ready to build a paint booth. nothting elobrate, one out of palstic. my question is; is it ok to use a fan to bring filtered air into the booth rather than have a fan pulling air out? If I push air into the booth I can get by without an expolsion proof motor. Thanks

I use a furnace blower to pull out the air. It is in an open-ended box outside of the spray room. A large duct connects it to the spraybooth. The motor is mounted on top of this box with a belt drive through a slot in the box down to the blower. A flap of leather covers the slot. This way the motor is out of harms way. A cheap box fan pushes air into the booth as well. You need lots of air moving through but not so much air speed that you can't spray. Use large ducts, big blowers and diffuse the air blowing in. Just a part wall in front of the box fan would do it.

I'm betting you may have more of a dirt problem with that homemade booth than just out in ole mother natures booth.

You can use the type of fan that you use in your house, they are brushless and therefore won't explode. I have see quite a few used for temporary paint booths. I use leave the plastic loose or cut slits in it lower down to get the heavy fumes out.

Bad idea! Those fans are open type motors. Paint etc can build up in the windings, the heat can ignite them. Regular electric motors are brushless also. That does not make the safe. Explosion proof motors are enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) with explosion proof connection boxs (not sealed). Capacitor start motors has internal switchs which arc. A TEFC motor would be the next best step from an explosion proof.

Generally speaking, it is more efficient to displace a contaminant with fresh air than to suck it out. There are some exceptions, but I think your idea is sound.
Read the MSDS for the paint. If the vapors are heavier than air, make sure you have an opening so they can get out down low. It may also tell you how many air changes per hour the manufacturer recomends.

Don't do this as a substitute for a respirator. Wear a respirator anyway.

You may want to filter the air you blow in to keep from getting any dust on your new paint.

the purpose to pull out the air inside is to get the bad stuff out...paint fumes are very deadly remove them don't leave them inside and also a better paint job if the overspray is pulled out...think about your lungs not about what you can get by with....have nice day may god bless
