Rear End Ratios

I have a '91 Dodge 150, 318 engine. The differential is bad. I have a differential out of a '91 Dodge 150 V6. Tag on the 318 reads 35.
Tag on the V6 reads 0734. Anyone know how to determine ratios? Thank you.

Count the teeth on the ring gear, and the pinion gear, and divide.

example: 12 teeth and 42 teeth equals 3.50 to 1.

Ford tags have the actual ration on the tag, don't know about Chrysler products.

Or get them out on a bench where you can make an accurate measurement. Mark the axle and drive shaft. Turn the drive shaft as many turns as necessary to cause the rear axle to make one complete revolution. That's your ratio. Being a differential, you will need to lock one shaft (so it can't turn); probably the left one would be better (driver's side).

Correction to Mark's reply:
If one wheel is locked, multiply the turns of the driveshaft by 2 for the ratio or make 2 turns of the wheel.

The differential gears are the reason. If you turn one tire with the drive shaft held, the other tire turns in the opposite direction at the same speed. If you turn the drive shaft with one tire locked, the differential gears work to double speed the other tire, ie, they average the rotation speed.

Ok. I guess if the guy did what I said and came out with a number like 7 or 8:1 he'd figure out that someting was wrong. Been awhile since I was into a differential.

Otherwise the thing to do would be to set up the two side by side and just compare them turn for turn without regard to counting.
