1992 F250 Diese

Hey, need your ideas...
I have a 1992 F250 Diesel 4x4 with 7.3 l international diesel. It has 250,000 miles...
I have $3,000 in it. I bought it this past winter. It runs GREAT, but drips oil from the rear main engine seal. If it idles for 2 minutes in the same spot, it will drip 7 -8 drops. Despite this, when I work it with a trailer, etc, I dont seem to be adding much oil...maybe 1 quart for 500 miles...burns some oil too. Strong truck though!

I use it 5,000 miles per year...I am concerned that maybe i should sell it and get something better before this leak explodes and it is really bad. However, what can a person get for $3,000? Not much, let alone a 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel? What would you do?

Some newer stuff then that leaks way more, put some cardboard under it. If it really bothers you do what I did in our 1981 Ford 351M pull the oil pan roll in new bearings and put in a new rear seal.

You pull the trans and flywheel to replace rear seal on the 7.3 engine

You may have a leaking oil pressure sender. I have replaced the sender on my 93 7.3 three times in the past five years. the sender is at the back of the engine on the top, but the drip will look to be comming from the rear seal.

All the above followups are good advice. I also, have a 1/2 ton w/6cyl gas at 240,000 miles. It used a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. I changed to Valvoline Max/Life 10w30 and have been running it for about 3 years now and it uses less than a quart in 3,000 miles, I put about 20,000 miles on a year. This oil softens up the seals and lets them seal again. Keep the Truck.

My Dodge Dakota v8 was leaking out the rear main like that on conventional 10w30, I switched to Mobil 1 and like 60,000 miles later it leaks less than a quart in 3,000 miles. Amazing stuff.

3000 bucks? Keep it and tolerate a little oil usage. By the way, check closely, maybe the oil is not even coming from the rear main. If not, it could be a relatively simple fix. Good luck.
