I am looking at this compressor for $299. Would it be better to go with something smaller in an oil model? I only stain, paint and nail finish boards. Maybe a nailer someday. Thanks and also I have a 1hp/5gal oil compressor that finally seized after 20 years, do you think it is worth fixing?

If the unit is only 6+CFM, in reality it is only a 1 1/2HP unit regardless of the motor mounted on it. If you want a long lasting machine buy a belt drive and a lubed type. For value get the most CFM for the dollars spent. A decent compressor should make close to 4 CFM @ 90 psi per horsepower.

I decided to go with an oil unit a two cyclinder model with 6hp and a 25 gallon tank for $299. This pump is not the largest but should serve my needs. It puts out 6.5 cfm at 90. Thank you for all the input.

Two cylinder single or two stage? Getting a two cyl, two stage is your best bet. They have great performance at higher pressures.

Also, this one would have to be one huge comressor to use a 6hp motor. LTF's computation is a good one.

I have a 5hp 20 gal coleman - 5.6 CFM @ 90 psi. Sells for $199 at home centers. I saw the sears 6hp 30 gal - 6.2 CFM @90psi. They're both oil-less, essentially the same setup (mine's loud too) Not a big difference except price ! I like it fine for occasional use and I don't have to worry about an oil trap.

I'd be curious to hear others responses on this as I have an oiless compressor that has a busted con rod in my garage and I would like to upgrade to the IR 6hp 60 gal unit that SEARS sells.

Brad , Have them plug it in at the store , and listen to it run. If it is the one I think your talking about , you probably won't buy it. It is the loudest compressor I have ever herd. My uncle bought one. When it kicks on , you can not hear anything but that compressor. When I say loud , I mean LOUD.

Thanks Scott. I am going over to the store to pick it up today, so I will have them plug it in before I take delivery. If it is too loud then I will look for another model. Appreciate the input. My hearing is already somewhat suspect, so I cannot have one that is absolutely TOO LOUD.
