Tommy,
Sounds as if you may need a little "one on one" help before you start making big changes to your system. Do you have a friend (or a friend with a teenager) who knows this stuff pretty good? It can be a big help to have someone sit down with you and show you exactly what to do.

I've been working with these "small" PCs for 20 years and made alot of mistakes. But I've found that people usually learn best when you are sitting right next to them.

Also, some of the software that "plays" with your hard drive and system configuration can have bad effects on your system, if not used exactly right.

HTH John

Here's a couple of more good sites for getting answers to your computer questions. There are some very knowledgeable people on those sites as well as this one.

One is cut and paste and the other link is to the other site.

Tommy, F14 is right about Norton`s. I think he might have overlooked that you might have an older version of Internet Explorer. If you do, you need to go to the View menu and choose Internet Options to clear the History and Temp Internet Files. If you are using IE 5 or later, go to Tools then Advanced and select the option which clears the Temp Internet Files everytime you close your browser. Typically programs using the install shield have an uninstall option if you go to the program folder but it won`t get all the little junk off. Run Defrag ASAP. Russ

Older versions of IE, and (I'm fairly sure) Netscape will provide the same function, you just have to rummage around in the menus to find it.

I don't normally advise upgrading just for the sake of upgrading (most of my stuff still runs Win95) but IE 5.5 has enough major improvements to make it worth the effort, if you are running older versions of IE.

Don't know about the newer Netscape. Used to be a BIG Netscape fan, but the State Department of Edu-makation standardized on IE, so I have to comply to be able to download stuff from their website.

This may or may not be what you're looking for, but not being computer illerate myself. There are different programs to purchase and a free download of one of the programs. The one we purchased has cleaned up a lot and has made what time I have on the computer more effecient and enjoyable.

If you have Windows 95 there is a defrag program already in it.

By way of credentials, I supervise the technology support program for a school district, and oversee the maintenance of nearly 400 computers.

Norton is good, IF, and only if, you know what you are doing. If you leave it to the default setup, it will install more crap than an Iowa hog farm, and slow the computer down even more.

If you are running Win95, use the built in Scandisk and Defrag. If you are running Internet Explorer, go to the tools menu, select options, and use the delete files function to clean up the internet cache first. You can also use Windows Explorer to go to the C:\Windows\Temp directory, and clean it out. Cleaning those two directories will usually free up a BUNCH of disk space.

If you are running Win98, go to My computer, right click on the "C" drive and select the "Disk cleanup" button, it will clean out those two directories automatically.

F14, when you mentioned that Norton will put a bunch of stuff on your computer, I agreed and went to take your advice to use the disk clean part of windows. Problem is that I have windows ME and I did not see that function when I right clicked on my computer. Is it different than 98?
Thanks.

Just re-read your post. You need to double (left) click on the My Computers icon to open the menu, THEN right-click on the icon for the C: drive, and click on properties. If there is a Disk Cleanup button, it should show up there.

As I said, I haven't fooled with ME yet, but that was one of the neater functions of Win98, so I'd expect they carried it over.

Probably, I haven't fooled with ME yet. (See my comment in an earlier post about unnecessary upgrades ":^)

I'd expect you should still be able to do it manually using the steps listed under WIN95.
