Auto darkening helmets (Again)

Today I was working on welding some bolts to a mowerdeck to hold down the shield for the belts when the ratcheting strap came apart when I adjusted it. This was a flip down cheapie helmet, so I was thinking of upgrading to an auto darkening from harbor freight that is $50. If I understand correctly, the reaction time is not going to hurt your eyes, just be like a camera flash if it is slow since the UV and IR rays are filtered out before darkening if it passes the ANSI standards? Also, is a 9-13 variable shade a good choice for AC arc welding with mostly 6011 rods? Viewing area will not be a big concern, I will just be doing some "farm welding". Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a Harbor Freight auto darkening helmet and like it a lot. That said, it works very well when it is fairly light outside. If used in the evening or indoors, there is a pretty good sized flash before the photo cell gets enought light to power the darkener. So I only use their auto darkening during daylight hours. Teh next helmet will come from Miller or other commercial grade outfit.

My HF auto darkening helmet (OTOS Camilian W8000) will darken if I get a glint of sun off a chrome plated or other highly reflective object, or the sun itself. It's nowhere near the length of a camera flash before darkening. It's made in Korea and was about $150 on sale for $110 a couple of years ago. I've had no problems with it yet although it stays in the original box several weeks at a time, due to weather, time, etc. The only thing I don't like is that it is strictly solar charged. At a projected life of 5 years, they may be better and cheaper by then. Or I'll tear it apart and put in new batteries, like I did with my Sonicare toothbrush.

Autodarkening helmets are one of man's greatest inventions. Both of mine came from Harbor Fright...and work just fine. Paid about $98 and $58 dollars respectively.

I do hobby welding and couldn't justify $250-300 for a helmet.

I also have this helmet, that I use for Tig welding on night shift at an Airline. Will not work with inverter type welders!

Probably the same one I bought from them. Love it. Can adjust reaction speed and yes it is fast enough.

Hurst: I"ve got one and have had no troubles in a year or so of fairly frequent use. It"s helped my welding a lot, and I would definitely recommend one to anyone who doesn"t weld all-day-every-day.

Your eyesight is worth more than $50. Maybe if no one bought that crap from harbourfrieght they would stop selling it. Spend the money and buy a Speedglass. I had a cheapie, eyesight went from 20/20 to 20/30. When I hire a welder, and he makes probation, I buy a Speedglass, less welder fatigue and absentee-ism.

I have used them before and also ended up in the hospital because of them, with my eyes burned. I will never us one again. I use only gold lens I believe they are 24 carat gold, haven't ever had a problem agin sine I have been useing them. And I do weld a lot, just last week went through 10 lbs of rod in 2 days.

I have one that I think is a SpeedAire. I wouldn't trade my for anything, well almost anything. For doing delicate work or to get things tacked in place you can't beat them. I still like my old helment that has the large glass in it though you can see quite a bit of area.
