I have an aluminum crank-out window that needs replacement hinge bolts and fiber washers. This window was popular in the '60s, but I can't find anyone that has those parts. But the crank and lock handle are still sold at all the places I've checked. I've tried local hardware, internet and McMaster Carr. The bolt has a 3/8" diameter shoulder about 1/2" long. Does anyone know where I can buy bolts and washers????

I take it your not from the johnstown , pa region? there are two places in town that should have what your looking for ones harveys supply co and the other is a place called fastenal
i thin not sure on teh spelling or if they have websites if you want the number just let me know

Now I think it's not a shoulder bolt, but a non rusting 1/4" bolt with a sleeve of the right length. Probably aluminum. Much cheaper to use short lengths of tubing and a bolt than to machine a shoulder bolt. I guess I'll buy bronze bushings and try to cut them to the right length. I made a few calls today to glass shops. One said they tried in the past to get the items from various suppliers with no luck. Apparently they never were supplied as repair parts. A Fastenal store is not too far from me here in Ca.

Slowpoke: Mcmaster-carr has a bunch of "shoulder bolts" I think I got a mental image of what you are looking for. As a last resort, could you take a bushing and fabricate your own shoulder bolt? Maybe find the right length/dia. and slip it over a bolt? I have taken a hole punch, made plastic washers out of antifreeze jugs. Just a couple ideas.

Your 'last resort' is probably the right answer. I can get a bronze bushing of the right diameters, but I don't have an operating lathe to cut to length. Looks like a hacksaw and file will do. I think a plastic washer will be too soft and deteriorate in the sun. If the fiber material is available in sheets, I could cut my own....or maybe not.

I have gotten even cuts on small bushings by first installing a bolt thru them and use a nut on the other end. You can tighten it up. The bolt should be long enuff so you can chuck the bolt threads up in a drill press. Then carefully hold a hacksaw against it. Cut it about 75% thru and you can finish it by hand. Crude, but it works to keep the cut straight.
