Had a similar problem with a 90's model. Problem was coil. Dampness would let the voltage arc down the side of the cooil to ground.

Had a 4.3L in a van. We had similar difficulties. Dealer finally traced it to a faulty crankshaft sensor. That sensor tells the ignition system it is OK to start.

You don't say what vehicle it's in. My wife's 2000 Blazer wouldn't start sometimes. It turned out to be a defective ignition switch that wasn't always reading the passkey code. It would fire right up with a snort of starting fluid: it turns out that if the computer thinks you're trying to steal the car, it shuts off the fuel for a few minutes.

MARK - PASSKEY CODE? in reply to MarkB_MI, 06-17-2005 03:53:18
Mark, I have two Balzers in the family, 200, and 2001 - both will start and run with a hardware store copy of the ignition key - no chips, resistors, etc. Is yours equipped differently? Or is ours the oddball?

Ray,

I don't have that vehicle anymore, otherwise I'd go check the manual, etc. It was the fully loaded LT version, if that makes any difference.

All I know is that when I took it in to the dealer and explained the problem, the service manager immediately said "ignition switch". I thought he was crazy, but we never had any problems after they replaced the switch.

The key for the newer Passkey systems isn't distinguishable from a regular key, so I can't say for sure that it had a passkey. I do remember reading the manual, and it seems like everything the dealer said made sense.

Is it possible you had remote starters installed on these cars? I think they have to bypass the Passkey system to make a remote starter work.

I have a 1998 and a local independent garage operator has a 1995 4.3. We think they are wonderful, good combination of power and fuel economy.

Buy a OBD II code reader, it is money well spent. Otherwise, you'll be spending money on parts you don't need. I wouldn't buy the cheapest reader either, maybe the "middle priced" one. They have more features.

Sounds like something in the ignition is drawng moisture. On these new engines, when you replace a plug or wires, you need to get an exact match.
Dont just buy anything that fits. I use O.E.M parts, cost a little more up front but is well worth it. I have seen cracked coils do what you describe. Sometime get it in a real dark place, have someone try and start it while you have a LQQksie and see if you see any fire jumping. Sometime a fee for a diagnostic check is the cheapest way to go. Then you know precisely what it needs. You can spend a fortune throwing parts at it.

I think it"s probably the coil or the coil wire. Jim

sometimes worn sparkplugs can cause this, that is, if the gap is way to wide. lucas
