I just located a 100 pound Vulcan anvil. It seems to be in pretty good shape & I want it to use so I do not care that it has some use showing. The thing that I am worried about is that it does not have a ring to it when you hit it with a hammer. Is this normal with this anvil or is something wrong with it? Thanks for any help you can give me. Dan

Whats "Vulcan"? If its cast into the body of the anvil, I'd have to doubt that some poor old farmer cast it out of soft steel. If its work worn, I'd say got for it and buy it...its with stood the test of time.

Yes it is cast into the side of it. There is one just like it on Ebay right now, I emailed the guy to see if his rings but have not heard back from him. What do you guys think it is worth? I always hear $1.00 a pound is that right?

About 15 years ago I saw an anvil on a sale bill. Went to the sale, when the anvil came up I jumped on it, (it was a beauty, long horn, some worn spots on the side, but in great shape) I had it bought for $20.00, the auctoneer stopped the sale, went into this big tirade about how they were worth a dollar a pound, and I ended up buying it for 80.00. It weighted about a 100..maybe 150, never actually weighed it, took me and a buddy of mine to carry it to my truck. Anyway, made a nice stand for it, and have had it since then, probably used it 5 times...LOL...I wouldn't take 400.00 for it. Buy the damn thing and use it...enjoy. You just can't buy stuff like that anymore. The one I have has the name cast into the side, it was made in Trenton Mo.

Hi Dan, Harder steel has a ring while softer steel has a dull tone. Could have been a homemade anvil with soft steel.

I have a vulcan anvil, 120lbs. use it a lot, it doesn't have the ring that some steel anvils have, a person should not be striking the face of an anvil without metal between it and the hammer anyway,,, there were many combinations of cast steel and molded anvils, you have a good size, if you want to know more, go to anvilfire, BIG website on smithing,,,,
