Around here in South Louisiana we call them 'tin' roofs. When they get old and start to rust it's every other sheet that gets rusty. Looks liked it was striped on purpose. Why is that?

The tin is made from a plated coil or roll. The material was coated and then corrugate. The galvanizeng was electroplated to the material and it was a lousy job. Try the newer galvalume coating as it is superior.

THE STEEL IN THE ROOF IS PROTECTED BY THE GALVANIZING, USUALLY ZINK. ANY TWO DISSIMILAR METALS THAT ARE CONNECTED WILL FORM A BATTERY IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ELECTROLITE (WATER). BECAUSE OF THIS THE ZINK BEING MORE REACTIVE THAN THE IRON, AS LONG AS SOME OF THE ZINK REMAINS ON ANY GIVEN SHEET THE STEEL WILL NOT GET MORE THAN SURFACE RUST, AS SOON AS ALL THE ZINK IS GONE THE STEEL WILL QUICKLY RUST THROUGH. NOW I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHATS GOING ON WITH THE STRIPED PATTERN, BUT I WOULD SUSPECT IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE GALVANIC ACTION ON THE SURFACE OF THE STEEL LIKE A STACK OF BATTERIES ALTERNATE POLES CONNECTED WHICH MUST ACCELERATE CORROSION ON EVERY OTHER CONNECTED SHEET AND PRESERVE THE ALTERNATES.
