I had asked about buying a new 12-ton cheapie import press a while back. Mainly because of budget limitations. The advice offered was to go a little bigger.

Think this qualifies?! Found it for $120. Made in 1944 (war production!), weighs 850 pounds, made out of 3/4" and 1" steel, stands 76" tall and 46" wide. It's a KR Wilson with a 3-ton mechanical feed, and a 2-speed hydraulic pump that'll give you 25 tons of squish. Probably could go a lot higher in a pinch.

Had to take it apart to move it, and right now it's in a pile in the basement. What a bear. Here's the "before" photo in the fellow's garage:

That press is a fine example of the what has happened to our country & economy... in only 50 or so years, we have gone from being the king of Design & Maufacturers, to being buyers of junk from China. Just look at that press... With a little care, it should last for hundreds of years... The China Crap we get today is only good for a few years. Cheaper is not always better..... Sad thing is, Companies thar built good products are all out of business now....

Nice press! What is the four bar hand crank on the right side used for? Is it a means of adjusting a threaded ram extension for initial contact?

The crank has a pinion gear on the end, and the ram has a rack directly machined into it. It'll act as a sensitive 3-ton manual press with that.

Still need to sort some things out. The ram is _really_ hard to move manually. Hope it's just crud and not bent.

Nice Press !!! That rigid ram is much safer than the cheap new presses. Those new ones will kick off center & throw the workpiece out . A friend was badly injured that way last year. You got a great deal on a fine press. It is a shame that stuff is not built like that now..... .

Congratulations, excellent find. The Wilson press is a jewell of a press, as it acts as an arbor press with the cross handle on the right, and as a hydraulic press also.

Go to this link for parts info and the manuals on these old presses, you can download.

John, It looks like you have got a good old press and haven't paid to much for it either. Did it come with its press plates? It will still be around in another 60 years if looked after.Well done
