Got a Gould water pump from my brother in-law. It stoped working for him and he thought I might be able to fix it and keep it for a spare for my house. Well took it apart and cleaned up the rust and scale. Hooked up temporary power and plugged it in nothing. Pulled the top cover and found the start switch was shot. Replaced it, now when I plug it in it sounds like it wants to start but wont. If I plug it in and give the shaft it slight spin it takes off and runs fine. Is the starting capacitor shot, that's what I'm leaning towards. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks..
Bill

Thanks to everyone for their help. After testing the capacitor and finding it to be okay, I took the pump apsrt. Messed up one through bolt but no big deal. Found out what leads went to what windings and did resistance readings. No open or shorts, put everything back together and notived that the replacement start switch (used) wasn't closing completely. Must of messed it up putting it it, readjusted and now everything works. Just goes to prove check and double check. Thanks agina, Bill.

In addition to the good advice given to you by ltf in nc. Another thing to consider is: When you replaced the start switch did you check the spool and the tension on the centrifugal switch? Sometimes you need to bend the arms on switch out towards the spool so the contacts on the start switch are held closed when the motor is stopped. Tom R.

Either the starting capacitor or the start winding is shot. You should be able to determine which if you have access to a multimeter.

Replacing the capacitor is the best first step to take. Use a replacement that has the same or greater MFD as the original and a voltage rating equal to the original. Voltage rating is critical for electrolytic capacitors. Do not substitute a voltage rating higher than original (for electrolytics), either. If necessary, the MFD rating can be increased up to 50% over the original. Since it is uncertain that the one in the pump is original, it would be best to stay as close as possible to the existing size, but do not use a lesser MFD rating.
