We bought this tractor last fall at an auction - trying to cut hay and can not get the idle to go down

Would be better with a little more info.

However if the engine is really screaming or will idle down with no inbetween it sounds like you have thrown a governor weight. Fairly common occurance in these engines. Just pull the distributer mounting plate replace both weights that you bought from the local allis dealer. put the plate back on making sure to time the engine according to the service manual and you are good to go.

One other thing I would try first is the idle adjustment on the carb. back the little screw on the throttle shaft out until you can get what you want. When you are doing this see if the shaft is loose in the carb body. If it is you will need a new shaft and bushings or a rebuilt carb depending on your abilities.

try posting in the allis chalmers board. Texas Denny is pretty good with this. though it sounds like the idle jet is plugged up or adjusted wrong
