Lead screw threads..

Ok guys another question for you. I have an older metal lathe and the lead screw (nut block?) stripped out. I managed to make a new one but I was going to just buy a couple of pretapped nuts and insert them into the old block but was unable to find any place that has that type of nut.. I thought they were all called acme thread. but these are different there is no taper to the teeth at all straight up and down both sides flat on the top.. acme is tapered and flat on the top.. Is there a name for this type of thread?
mcmaster-carr has Acme but not these.. 8TPI

My brother had a big lathe that the half nut stripped out. He used some type of epoxy that is used on pto shafts that are worn. I told him that I would of used clean brass fileings with the epoxy mix to make it wear better.

What you are looking for is ACME thread not square.

He already said it was not acme thread.Did you actually look in an MSC catalog because they dont have it?

I have never seen it done, but a guy that has spent all his life repairing machine tools told me this once. He has poured Babbit, & also used high-strength epoxies to renew the threads in half-nuts in lathes. Just something to think about.....

Do a search on the web for MSC. They have lots of ACME threaded rods and nuts. I haven't looked to see if they have square or not. The other thing to keep in mind is the lathe has percision ground threads and nut. Good luck.

That style is called square thread.I bought some nuts and threaded rod like that from a place called IPS international pipe and supply in Cal.I no longer get the catalog probably from not ordering much recently.I used it on an old Pratt&Whitney that had a reverse cross feed that was driving me crazy.They had it in left hand and right hand thread and both type nuts.
