I know that the EPA banned Dursban and Diazinon. I know that Permithrin is used to fight/kill Carpenter ants and I use this now. Is there any plans to ban Permithrin insecticide? Does anybody know? Is there another available insecticide for Carpenter ants that works better and can be bought at a hardware store? I figured you guys would know the best especially anybody who farms. Fill me in, thanks.

Take a look at the PestSupply.com website. They have a list of goods that are targeted for carpenter ants. I have done business with them for about 5 years and have always been happy with their pricing and service.

I live in a heavily wooded area and we have a bumper crop of carpenter ants. I have been using Advance carpenter ant bait and it works pretty well. It"s granulated and they bring it back to the nest and feed it around. It stops them from being able to molt and the whole colony subsequently dies. It"s nice when you can"t find the nest to treat it directly. They take it back for you. If you have a dog he may want to eat it so be careful. It won"t kill the dog but it will make him sick. (experience)

I like Tempo for bug control on a homeowner sized basis. Great for mosquitos, ants, etc. It"s safe to use in and around the house, has a decent carry-over, and is relatively cheap. Find it at your chemical supply store (Simplot, etc.) Something else that works on carpenter ants is boric acid. Mix it 50/50 with grape jelly and put a little smear (like the size of a drop of water) by the hole - they bring it back and feed it and dry up.

Joe, I use the liquid so I really don't know - here is a link to the labels. I mow and spray at the same time and I pull a 10 gal. ground driven Handi-Sprayer. Based on my square footage and the rates, I use about 45 ml per 10 gallons of water. Everyone will be different as all the sprayers aren't equal.

I still see Diazinon at Home Depot. Don't know how they are selling it if it's banned, but it is the Ortho line of Diazinon.

If it works, it"s probably banned or about to be.... If it"s cheap and works, it"s long gone. If you have some leftovers, I"d go ahead and use.

There is a borate wood treatment called Bora-Care that is supposed to be effective against carpenter ants as well as termites and powder post beetles. It's expensive ($98/gal) but is cut with water to apply.
Here is the formula to home brew an equivalent I found on the web.
One gal. propylene glycol (pink ) antifreeze.
4.5 lbs. of borax
3.5lbs. of boric acid
Mix together and gently boil to 260 degrees F (use candy thermometer)
Allow to cool. Dilute two to one with water apply to wood with garden sprayer,
After it dries it can be painted

I tried to make this stuff tonight with mixed results. I used -50F antifreeze and should have used -100F I think. By the time it was up to 260F it was thick and gooey. I think to much borate relative to glycol after boiling off the water. I thinned it with an equal amount of water and applied it to my sills.
