I have a Scag mower I am "reconditioning". Its a good mower, just that the maintenance was ignored for awhile.

In the process of inspecting and repairing and replacing parts, I found several shroud screws missing and a couple broken off in the lugs on top of the cylinder heads. I removed the fan shroud to make access easier and discovered a little black electrical module mounted on the outside of one of the cylinder side shrouds, next to the starter. This module is described in the parts catalog as p/n 24 584 05 "module, speed advance" and it has had all the wires clipped off of it. No evidence remains of where the wires might have gone to.

The engine started up and ran fine, but I never drove or mowed with the mower as the hydro pump belt was busted when I got it, and I've been disassembling and replacing parts ever since.

Any ideas what this module does, or why someone might have clipped the wires? Is it some sort of electronic spark advance?

Where can I find wiring diagrams that will show where the wires connect if I decide it needs a new one?

It is marked as a CV22S but it is a spec number 67513, which makes it a straight CV22 without the "S".

I located the part using the parts breakdowns on the M&D mower web site (very helpful I might add)

Thanks for any advise anyone might have.

Charles

That little black box is referred to a SAM it is a spark advance module. It is the same as a vacumn advance on a distributor. This thing is what keeps the engine running correctly, without this module hooked up, it will run, but it will run out of time at higher RPM,depending on what coils are on it, and what your plans for this thing are, but you might want to replace both coils and the SAM unit, Kohler had a lot of probelms with that set up and replace a lot of the coils and SAM, that way you are not guessing on what is working and wht is not. A SAM unit can actually test good and still not work correctly, they have given me many hours of grief. By all means get a repair manula on this thing, it will save you a lot fo heacheas down the road. As the the CV22S not showing up on the model/spec chart, that is correct with kohler's parts breakdown, they do not use the trim letters in the parts breakdowns, just use the spe number and you will be correct. The "S" just means you have a 12V gear drive starter on the engine.

thats spark advance module .the 2 wires go to the 2 ignition coils. without the module hooked up you only got an 18hp . the cv18hp engine is the same only doesnt have the spark module.you can run without it, just wont get as many rpms.it probably went bad and they just clipped it instead of a new one. lucas

I don't have ay answers for you but you can download engine manuals, I think with wiring diagrams, from the Kohler engine site.

Wow, thanks for the tip on the manuals. I'd never thought that they would "give" away the manuals like that. Most companies want to sell them to you. Kinda stupid of me actually to never even look at their web site.

Have to give Kohler credit! in reply to Charles (in GA), 06-07-2005 19:37:36
For giving out their manuals online. I've used that for both my mower (CV-14) and to look one up for the firehouse.

Annoys me no end when I find a company that wants to charge for an online manual for a product they built!

All these manuals today, and for the last 10+ years, have existed in an electronic format at some point prior to printing. Isn't much trouble to buy a copy of Adobe Distiller and create PDFs for people.

I have no problem with charging for printed editions, or for on-line editions my companies that re-print manuals or made electronic editions for out-of-business companies or very old products that never had electronic versions of the manuals to begin with.
