Ball bearing mounting

I want to use a 5/8 x 1-3/8 (R10ZZ) ball bearing on the steering shaft of my riding mower. The shaft is only supported by a plastic collar as part of the instrument panel. There is a 3 x 3 clear area on the underside for mounting, but what can I make to hold it? I think any tack welding to a plate could damage a sheilded bearing, maybe burn up what little grease it has. I guess I could just make a larger hole and use a cheap pressed steel bearing which has a rim on one side, but it has little protection from dirt and dust. Any ideas?

Obtain a "flangette style" bearing with the appropriate hole size. Weld one of the flanges in place, and then intstall the bearing and the other flange.

Well, the whole panel is plastic, so whatever holds the bearing has to be bolted to it. Where did you find the flangette bearing and holder? From the picture it looks like the bearing is centered between the two halves. That would require 3 spacers under the holder, right?

Go to ANY equipment dealer and ask for a round-back bearing of the correct size and the mounting flanges for it. I take it you've not spent a lot of time on a combine or other farm equipment?????

Another way is to take a 1" flat washer and drill 3 hooles in it to just fit around the bearing and use this to clamp the outer race to the dash or whatever you need to mount it on.

That's a good idea for a metal base to bolt to, but plastic likes to crack if it has any little force pulling on it. Maybe a plate with 3 studs welded to it in the OD of the bearing, with 3 matching holes in the 1" washer.
Then the bearing could be tightened against the plate with no strain on the plastic. Thanks, I'm getting some ideas now.
