I made the mistake of going to the "New & Improved" Lowes store today. It is right in the middle of everything, Right across from a huge mall. There is only one single lane in & out. Old Store was out on the highway, with access from several roads. I cannot understand why a company would leave a perfectly good store only 10 years old, to move to an area that is total chaos.... Sad thing is, almost all the small hardware stores are gone, so we have little choice now.....

Davis, Assuming you are talking about the Spartanburg, SC Lowe"s, they also moved from the county to the city limits and get to pay city taxes. The previous store there was a Super K which said they were paying $200k in city taxes. Go figure. There is a good small hardware store up the street at the corner of hwy 29 and Old Blackstock road. Yes, Bullis has a nice little store, I buy some stuff there. It was a shame that it burned a few years back. But they rebuilt & seem to be doing a good business....

Didn't you tell me once you lived down in the Spartanburg area. I just got back from down there a couple of weeks back and tried the new store out. Your right, access to and from the lot, especially in my service truck, was no fun. It takes a real bright corprate type to make a home improvment store where people are gonna be driving trucks and trailers, etc and make the lot friendly to nothing but compact cars..... When I was down there about a month ago they were still at the old store and the lot there was wide open. Problem was they were in the process of closing the old store and selling everything cheap. Funny thing is they hadn't opened the new store yet so they didn't have much of anything to sale so I had to go on down the road to Home Depot. I'd hate to see how much they lost in sales in the weeks prior to opening the new store because they didn't have anything left in the old one worth selling. It looks liek it would have made alot more sense to open the new store and gradually move the old product over to it instead of selling everyting at 50%+ off and taking that loss or worse throwing away whatever didn't sell. I can understand some items not being worth the time and energy to move but to be able to sell off nearly the entire inventory like this and not have a disasterous amount of losses they must have a massive markup on everything from the get go. You always see the questions about why everything costs so much, but when you see something like this it isn't hard to come up with an answer....

Wayne, that did seem a strange way to move... Shut one down, & wait til the new one is ready to open. And this was done in the peak spring season, they lost all of the garden & lawn business. I bet Home Depot loved that..... As far as the unsold merchandise, I have been told that some large chain stores get suppliers to foot the bill for unsold & damaged merchandise.....

They do this to be near the high traffic areas in hopes to increase their sales bottom line.
