hinge hasp

Picked up what I thought was a simple hinge hasp to put a padlock on a shed door. When I went to install it had an extra piece/hinge on it. What is that all about? thanks in advance.

If I understand what you are describing I think it is for an application where the surface of the door and the surface of the frame or surrounding area are offset or not even with each other. The extra hinge lets the hasp bend around the corner. Does that make sense?
