Folks,

I have looked everywhere trying to find a spoked cast aluminum 10" v belt pulley.....I need it for my corn sheller. I've tried ebay, the hardwares and the flea markets. Lots of small diameter stuff but no 10" size. Can anybody help me out? Thanks.

Lots of evaporative cooling air conditioners use aluminum spoked pulleys about that size on the blower but they may not be wide enough. Electric motor places or industrial & bearing supply.

I have an odd cast iron pulley. It's 10-5/16 and uses a 4L (1/2") belt, BUT it has a tapered bore, 1/2" x 5/8 in a 1" thick hub, with a keyway. It has 3 'S' arms and is drilled for balance. Looks like it was used on something old and fast turning.

That pulley is usable!!! Take it to a bearing supply house, with the size of shaft that you want to mount it to, and they will sell you the hub that mounts inside it. The tapered hole gives it away. If it lookes like the bolt holes are split between the center and the pulley, its a "Taperloc" , if the pulley has holes in it to pull the hub up tight, its a fort worth style center hub. A good bearing supply house will fix you right up!!!

Sorry, Spud. It's none of the above. It's a fixed tapered bore in the pulley hub. There's no way to change it except to rebore it. I think the Fort Worth style you refer to is called QD by Browning.
It's split on one side and has 3 threaded holes and 3 thru holes. It should work with either threaded or thru hole pulleys.

A large 4-jaw ,it would not be hard to dial up & bore.... Or it could be done on a Bridgeport with a boring head...

I think I'll leave it as is. It's the only one I've seen with a tapered bore. And there's a lot of furnace fan pulleys around. A couple times a year, I'll find a fan and pulley assembly in the local autobody repair shop scrap bin. People love to dump their junk there at night. The owner is happy to see the stuff removed as it costs him $175 to have it hauled off when the bin is full.

Thought maybe it was what it aint!!! And the QD is the same as the forth worth hub! YOU AN OLD MAINTENANCE MAN? Most of these kids dont have a clue when I use these antiquated terminoligies.

Not really an old maintenance man, Spud, but I like playing with mechanical things. My earliest memory is when as a little kid I made a set of snow chains to fit my bicycle. I still like to see tractor tire tracks in the snow or mud. Why??? Who knows. A lot of knowledge comes from catalogs like Grainger and the fact that when I want to build something, I find all the info I can on how to do it. Like my combination Paint Mixer, Gas Tank Cleaner and Rotating Weld Positioner. (Which still needs some work on the welder part.) And the fact that I worked for a few years on conveyors and other mail processing equipment.

Spud,

It's apparent I need an education in Pulleys 101! I confess complete ignorance on the subject, but I'd like to learn the termonology. Just what reference book might have this information on pulleys and sheaves?

I also want to thank everybody who has offered suggestions and comments.

Try McMaster-Carr. You need the belt size, outside diameter of the pulley and the bore size. In about 2 minutes I found one for about 18 bucks, but I just guessed about your belt size and bore.

Thanks a bunch. No Grainger stores here but I'll look through Mc-C and find one.

I had a feller from California email and say he thought he had one that'd work. The shaft bore is 3/4", the belt width is 1/2" close as i can tell by looking at the motor pulley.

Browning is a MAJOR maker of such pulleys, both bored to fit and with hubs. Their catalog is a gold mine of drive parts.

Baum Hydraulics at Omaha has a decent catalog without the design details of the Browning catalog, but they sell the parts. For Browning you have to go to a dealer, like a bearing specailties store, Iowa Bearing is one near here. Baum has a larger selection than McMaster-Carr. www.baumhydraulics.com

There's a bearing supply near here, aptly named, Bearings, Inc. If it rolls they have it, but higher than hades on prices.
