Magnetic base drill

Well, I thought I would be brave and buy a magnetic base drill off of the internet. It came in very quickly to my surprise but was very disappointed in it after I plugged it in. It is a 1 1/4 inch capacity milwaukee. Drill motor sounds ok but you can turn on magnet then lift it off of plate with one hand. I would think it should take a lot to pull one off. It is not going to stay mounted on a plate to even begin to drill. Have any of you ever had one of these? Shouldn't they stick better than that?

I bought a used mag drill that worked fair for a while then it quit holding. I found four diodes in the magnet circuit that were open. Replaced all four and it worked better than when I first got it. Sounds like you might have the same problem

I just used standard diodes with a high enough volt and amp rateing from electronics supply. They are not expensive.

Something is wrong!!!!! !!!! Those drills should stick like glue. I bought a new 3/4 inch drive Milwaukee last year. It has a sensing system that will not let spindle run unless base is magnetized. I have done some aggressive drilling with it, & never had it to move or let go... These drills do require a flat smooth surface, with a minimum steel thickness of 1/2 inch, if I remember correctly. Sounds like your magnet windings or the switch may be defective.....

I rented a Milwaukee mag drill from the local rental center. It had a real wierd sequence to energize the magnet.. It should stickhard enough to not pull off with extreme pressure on drill bit.....

Oh heck , I don't remember exactly. I've borrowed or rented several different drills over the last year. One that was rented energized with a single switch, Another I had to hold one switch while energizing another. Check with your local rental yard , they usually rent Milwaukee units or can tell you what to do.
