Gentlemen; Would a harbor freight 8" rotary table[with indexing] be ok for somewhat wide tolerance machine work or would I be wasting money?Would I be better off with a used American made unit? The price is $168 in a catalog I just received. There is a used machine shop salvage place in the next town.Should I just go there and pay about $200-400 for a known brand.

Thanks guys,Davis made a good point about size.Although I thought an eight inch would work it really will be too small for the job Im looking to do[thrust washer recess in a galled Harley aftermarket flywheel, part of the crank assembly.]Davis thanks for getting me thinking.PJW and Martin also got me thinking. You guy just saved me from wasting money.I love this tool talk!!

Let me tell you about the HF mill vise I bought. First it took several months for the order to come in. I canceled the order in writing several times, as I could not get a confirmation the order was canceled. Once it arrived I decided to keep it because of the hassle returning it. I basically had to machine the entire vise to get it workable. There stuff is garbage, always will be garbage. Unfortunately once in while I still get drawn to the garbage dump, because the prices are enticing.... Do as I say but not as I do... keep away from HF

Dr.S. I bought a Chinese Rotary table several years ago, a 6 inch one. I had to index a part in the oil on the EDM machine, & I did not want the oil with particles to ruin my good Bridgepert Rotab. Actually, that little table was of fairly good quality, I have used it for several other jobs, & it works well. I have not seen that particular table, but I recommend a few checks before you buy..... Crank it through several full turns of the table, feeling for tight spots when cranking. See if you can adjust worm to get minimal backlash, & make sure the locking levers work well. I am not sure what size work you are planning, but an 8 Inch Rotab, does not allow much room to clamp a part. Unless you build special fixtures, you are going to be limited to a 2 or 3 inch diameter workpiece when you factor in the length of the clamps. All in all, I think you would be better to look for a used Rotab. Since the advent of CNC machines, there are plenty on the market at cheap prices.....They are almost obsolete in big shops now. As far as used ones go.... Bridgeport ones are nice, Troyke is taller & heavier, but I really like them. King of all Rotabs is a Moore, if you find one of them, send it to me :^)

Phase II tools seem to have a good reputation in hobby machining circles. They are also relatively inexpensive, so you may want to check these too.
