Hi all, My new house is done jet pump installed by my father and I, we used Galvanized fittings for the pump and pressure tank. we dont see any rust at all, before we went to galvanized we used black steel fittings not realizing we needed galvanized fittings and they rusted very quick. our problem is, when we flush the toilet or fill up a bath tub, the water comes out clean, but when it sits for a for period of time, it starts to form a black substance on the bottom, and we cant figure where this is comming from. If it something in the new Cistern or somewhere else, has anyone ever had a problem like this? any info would be helpful.
Thanks.

This may be caused by iron bacteria. Try treating the water with Clorox and see if it clears up.

There's a lot of information out on the web if you google on "cistern clorox". Here's just one link.

Black usually means hydrogen sulfide and or manganese. Iron is usually red or brown. If hydrogen sulfide -- will smell and taste like rotten eggs.

Seem to remember a water tester telling me that some bacteria can do that.

I had a cistern before we finally got city water here in the county. My cistern was fed from the metal roof on my garage and I would pour some Cholrox every so often...water was crystal clear but I wouldn't drink it. Clean your cistern once and you'll agree. Seems all sorts of critters get flsuhed off the roof, the gutters and into the down spouts. Great for washing clothes, the commode, etc.
