Replacing Compressor Motor

My father was given and old-ish Quincy Compressor, sans the motor. It is a sizable compressor and tank and seems worth putting back together. The motor he has tried on it (1HP I think) does not have enough power to run this thing efficiently.

Anyone know how to figure out what size motor and pully this thing needs; or where to find the specifications. Quincy web site seems to be no help.

Info off the compressor is as follows:

Model 208-5
SN (I think) 895040-L
Size 2 and 1/4" X 2"

Having sold and serviced hundreds of compressors. I always found that if a person wants the motor to start with no load be sure to place a check valve in line between the compressor and tank. A great check valve is the one that uses a ball in it some even have a marble. The next is to drill a really small pin hole in the line betwwen the check valve and compressor pump. This allows a little air to bleed off yes even when running but very little loss.When the motor shuts off the check closes and the compressor bleeds off allowing a no load start up. You can by with a lot smaller motor also as once running the compressor needs very little horse power it is needed in the starting.

Calculating out gives me 2.3 hp based on displacement. A 3hp would would give you a nice understressed unit.

Quincy should be able to tell you what size and speed motor and pulley size should be installed on it.

You need to use a full running rated motor designed for compressor use. There are motors rated for compressor use and ones that are not. It has to do with the amount of starting torque, etc.

Do it wrong, and you will always have problems, do it right and you will probably have a trouble free compressor for years to come.

These older pumps were designed to run at a max of around 850 rpm's. All the Quinsy compressors I have seen usually have at least 3 to 5 hp 220 volt, 1725 rpm motors. To determine the motor pulley size you need to run at 850 rpms use the following formula

..... ..... ..... ..... ..... (pump speed) x (pump pulley size)
Motor pulley size = ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... (Motor speed)

This should give the pulley size you will need... Took me some doing to figure out how to post formula. Hope you can understand it...Keith

Even if the compressor takes 2HP to run. The econo 2HP motors do not have enough starting torque. It takes a higher resistance rotor/dual bar rotor, more/bigger start windings and/or a larger than normal start capacitor. Even with the ideal motor, if the supply voltage at the motor drops too low. That motor cannot start the compressor.

Do you know the CFM output? If you know this then you can calculate the motor needed. You will need about 3.5HP per CFM. If the compressor is a 7Cfm output at 100psi then you need a 2HP motor. anything over 2hp you may need 220VAC.

Do you have that listed right or do you mean 1hp per 3.5 CFM. I believe this is what you meant since with the original formula at 7 CFM you would need 24.5hp, or basically a small tractor to run it.

I ran across this previous post on my search for old Quincy information.

I have a chance to pickup an old Quincy compressor, and I was wanting to figure out some specs. here is what the info plate says

model 212 [24]
355684 L
Size 2 1/2 x 2 1/2
Quincy

It is on a homemade type tank (looks like it anyways) about 100 gallon (estimate). I have access to a Baldor 3hp single phase motor either 115 or 230. It is a 3450 rpm motor though. Any specs or will this work with the right pulley to reduce the speed? Any info would be great, I plan to pick it up tomorrow if possible, if it will work for me.
