A couple of weeks ago I got excellent info on chisel work to cut bricks and portland cement. All worked real well and I want to say thank you. Is it possible to cut a brick length ways with a chisel? My next project has some blocks with irregular surface but still in pretty good shape. Any suggestions to make it work to keep it straight. Figured if I could knock some off length of brick would work. THanks

Aye Lad,
It is possible to cut a brick anyway you desire with a chisel. When I was stationed in England in the late 70's, my neighbor was in the process of re-building his conservatory. Part of the job included replacing some of the masonry. One day I watched as he cut a brick lengthways into a tapered slab... the thickest end measured about an inch... tapered down to about a quarter inch over the length of the brick. He simply used his masonry chisel to "score" where he wanted the brick to break... used light taps with the hammer and went over the "cut line" two or three times... by the time he finished the last go-round, the brick split apart... looked as if it had been cut with a saw! I had never seen anything like that before, but have since cut bricks with a masonry chisel in every way imaginable... no problems!! (keep your chisel sharp!!!)HTH
Regards, DL
