Went to the local gas supply house to have a small acetylene tank filled and they wouldn't refill it. They said they no longer fill this type. It has the welded bands on the top and the bottom. Asked the local scrap man about disposal. He said, if it was oxygen no problem but he couldn't do anything about acetylene. Does anyone know of a safe way or place to dispose of an old acetylene tank? If it can't be used it is not something I want have around.

Oxy, and acetylene bottles make good wind chimes, when cut to different lengths. The type that will keep the neighbors awake in a good wind, even if they live a mile down the road. But cutting them to length can be hazardous to your health.

I needed to refill someone else's tank, and it was from a place out of state. Local welding supply places would only refill it after I paid a $45 inspection and testing fee. Tractor Supply here has an exchange program. They took it, didn't seem to care whose it was. Really didn't look at it close at all. I'd try swaping it with a place like that.

Hi AV,

To many new laws out to say for sure as the all gas suppliers have changed the way they do business about 3yrs ago. Acetylene is now classified as hazardous waste so the cylinder will be hard to get rid of if in fact it can't be refilled.

Check with another gas supplier and if he won't take it, sit it out by the garbage cans and it'll be gone in a couple days. If that don't work add a red bow to the cylinder at Christmas time and it'll move quickly. If that don't work, visit your local building supply and park away from the doors, leave the tailgate down and go shopping.

I can't say this with 100% certainty but I've never run into a good solid tank of any type that they couldn't refill. We had one we had picked up somewhere that the last test date on it was from 1956 and believe it or not it was full of acetylene and we used it. Wether it was the same type your talking about I don't know, but nothing was ever said about the age of the tank, etc. when we exchanged it for a full one. Personally I'd call around to several other places and make sure that their not just trying to sell you a new tank. If in fact there is some new rule out there than ask them what they do with all the tanks they have to get rid of due to damage, failed hydro test, etc. Just like everything else, if they make it there has to be something to do with it when it reaches the end of it's life....

Part of the disposal problem stems from the fact that even though your tank has no more acetylene it still has acetone in it . Acetylene is not gas cmpressed into a container like oxygen. It is dissolved under pressure in acetone like carbon dioxide is dissovled under pressure in club soda. It can only release 1/7 th of the tank volume of actylene per hour in the event of a broken valve.
