While the subject of 2-stroke oil is still going ... I have a question.. Sometimes I dump enough 2-stroke mix in my push mower (Briggs) to finish the lawn... The guy down the road runs a mower shop, he said it will destroy the piston rings. Does not sound likely to me, seems that all it could cause would be fouled plug & carbon build up.... Any opinions ???

It's not going to hurt the rings. If it were, your 2-stroke engines would all have damaged rings. The metal is the same.

Your supposition that the worse that could happen is some carbon buildup is spot on. Just like you get in 2-strokes.

I do it occasionally and have had no adverse effects.

If you continually put a two cycle mix in your mower, it will eventually carbon up the head, and rings more than normal. Excessive carbon can stick the rings in the piston and eventually could cause damage. Now you would ahve to do this for a very looonnnggg time for this to happen. I recommend this to my customers all the time if they need to get rid of two cycle gas instead of throwing it away. As long as you run your engine at top RPM, you probably will not even foul a plug or notice it.

Every spring I take leftover gas and mix it in my lawnmower cans. Back in days of yore, we used to put a can of A/T fluid in a full tank of gas once in a while.

let me clarify, we used A/T fluid in the "old car gas tank" once in a while.

I used to live next door to a mechanic that worked on Indy cars, He taught me that pouring A/T fluid into the carb at a high rev would free a stuck valve. I tried it on a 390 Ford and it worked like a champ. Smoked for a few minutes and left some sludge under the tailpipe, but the car ran fine for years after.

You asked for opinion, and thats all I have--I'm with you. Hardly a day goes by but some one tells me to add "lubrication" to my gas tank.
