Back in the mid 70s, I installed some automatic drain kits on the compressor drains where I worked and also on some of the lines that were a long way from the compressor itself. They worked like a charm. Sometimes a worker would be standing close to one of them, and would jump when the auto-drain decided to "Spit". We bought the units from W.W. Grainger at the time for about $15.00 each. Also they would quickly snap apart for cleaning when needed.

I tried one from Harbor Freight. it leaked so bad I couldn't use the compressor. To instal it I had to cut the bleeder line. Had to order a new line before I could use the compressor again. My sugestion is don't bother, just extend the drain where it is easy to reach.

I had the same experience as John with the Harbor Freight kit. It looked like a pretty good unit but it just wouldn"t handle the 150 lbs. of my compressor. My solution; install the drain valve so it is real handy (and visible) and drain it every day or so.
