Our Air Compresser is having a problem staying full of air. Every time it fills up it then releases all the air out again. Anyone know know of what"s causing this? A bad release valve maybe? What"s a good way to troubleshoot this problem? Thanks for any responses..... .

Dont want to sound like a smart a$$,I shut it down and walk the lines and listen for leaks....If the leak is to small to hear test all the joints with a little dish soap and water using a small - 1" paint brush....My line had a small leak I couldent fix so I put a ball valve after the tank.....

Your compressor likely has an "unloader" valve to vent the air trapped in the compressor head at shutdown to allow easier re-starting.

This "unloader valve" is either operated by a centifugal governor on the compressor that causes it to open at shutdown, or by the pressure switch itself, so that when the pressure switch shuts down the compressor, it also opens the unloader valve.

You can track down which system you have by looking for a small copper line from the tank check valve area to a housing at the end of the compressor crankshaft opposite the belt pulley, or to the side of the pressure switch.
For this system to work, the tank check valve has to be functioning, to keep the air in the tank from flowing back towards the compressor, and out the "unloader" valve.

It sounds like the problem is a bad chack valve.

3tom, Just a guess but I would get some soap solution and spray it on the joints around the system, pressure controls have been known to leak off too. Make sure it isn`t the relief valve gone bad. Exhaust valves gone bad will allow the air to back up through the comp and back out the suction header. If it is a large system a lot of tiny leaks add up to be one huge leak. Is your area so noisy that you can`t hear any leaks?
