I will send a drawing to your e mail if you want it. It takes a while to download.

Would it be possible for you to email me your plans on building a phase converter? I have a metal shear that is three phase and would like to run it as single. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Larry

I would appreciate your hand made drawing and will use it at my own risk. It's probably simpler than most expanations that I've seen.

I'd love to have one, too, if you don't mind. I've been carrying around a 1 HP and 7.5 HP three phase motors for seven years waiting for the "know how" to make rotary phase converters out of them. That's one project I'd love to dust off and finish!

Not a problem but you will have to post an e mail address. This drawing is a freehand effort but it definitely works. You will be using this at your own risk.

Thanks! Got it just fine and will get busy this week, I can just see the freed up shelf space now... No worries, all liability assumed herewith (or whatever).

Purdy simple. You need a 10 HP or larger 3 phase motor. Hook the two hot single phase wires to two of the proper sets of the three phase leads that you would connect to wire the motor if you were going to run the motor. Belt a single phase motor to the 3 phase motor and start the 3 phase motor rotating at full speed with those two single phase wires hot. You can then pick up your third phase from the third connection of the spinning 3 phase motor. After the motor is up to speed you can unbelt the starting single phase motor and the three phase motor will continue to run and generate the third phase

Or do what I did which was to put a chain drive on the dummy motor shaft and kick it with my foot to get it spinning. Then turn the switch on to feed single phase to the dummy motor. I've been running industrial machinery that way for years with no ill effect other than the elec. bill. Of course you don't get full power from your tool. Far as I can tell, the capacitors in a commercial rotary converter only are used to start the dummy motor. I'd just as soon kick-start it as pay the $60 for the capacitors. A true 3 phase would be nice but I don't want to set up a shop where it's available.

Yup, I see they all wants something fancy. I worked with a guy that had a ten man tool shop run on what I discribed for many years. He was out in the country where 3 phase couldn't be had. He was useing a 75 horse motor to generate the third phase. He had to use two horse motors rather than one horse motors on his mills.

Hi, Do you use 110 volts in each of the two wires that goes to the phase converter motor (3 phase motor) for leg 1 and 2? If these two wires are to be 220 volts, how do you wire them from a control box to the 3 phase motor?
