Thinking about getting a 5th wheel trailer or a motor home. Any suggestions on what to look for? I have a chevy 1/2 ton with a 5.3. Looked at several units then stared looking at motor homes. Anyone out ther familur with Sunseeker?

When considering a towing vehicle one thing I believe is important is the way the rear axle is constructed. All the � ton pickups (and light duty � ton pickups) run what is called a semi-floating axle. This means that the outside of the axle runs in one bearing that is between the axle housing and the shaft. The inside of the axle is carried by the spider gear which has a bearing on the outside of it.

The heavy duty (my definition of heavy duty anyway) have what is called a �full-floating� rear axle. This type of axle is the industry standard for all trucks including the 18-wheelers. In this configuration there are two heavy large bearings between the outside of the axle housing and the hub where the wheels bolt to. The axle bolts to the hub through a flange on the outside of the hub and the other end is carried by the spider gear in the differential.

Now when pulling something there is a certain amount of weight that is transferred to the rear of the tow vehicle. In the semi-floating axle, the axle shaft actually has to carry all the weight of the vehicle plus deliver the rotational torque to keep the vehicle rolling down the highway. To compound this, as the shaft rotates the weight stress changes direction on the shaft and if the load is heavy enough the axle shaft may actually �flex� as it rotates. The spider gears get additional stress on them as well. This is a recipe for a broken axle.

In contrast, the full floating axle transfers all the weight force to the two large bearings to the hub. The axle housing carries the weight stress; the only stress the axle carries is the rotational stress. I much prefer the full-floating axle configuration when pulling or hauling.

I have a 1994 Chevy ex cab that I pull a 1994- 27.5 FW with no slide. Bought the trailer in Alabama and pulled it to Iowa. Then went out I-80 to California, down the coast and back on I-40 across AZ, NM, up to Hays, Ks and then back to Iowa. I had put a transmission cooler on before leaving home in Iowa. Everything worked great.. No problems at all....deadeye

I pull a Sunnybrook 2750SL 5th-wheel with "02 Ford F-150 ( 7700lb package with helper springs added). I am to the max of the GVW, but it does a nice job. I don"t think I would take it to the mountains. Last camper was a Jayco Quest 237A (24ft. 5th-wheel) and that was a beautiful combination. Watch your pin weight, anything around 1000 lbs, anything about 24 foot, I think you would be OK. You will find many of 1/2 ton bashers. I drove tractor & trailers for the last 35 years, but it"s just my opinion.

A 1/2 ton pickup, chevy or otherwise is not a suitable tow vehicle for any but the tiniest of fifthwheels. All vehicles are rated for both gross vehicle weight and towing weight. The gross weight is on your tire pressure sticker.

The difference between the empty weight of your vehicle and the gross weight is the maximum weight you should possibly put on your vehicle. This includes people and gear.

The maximum tow weight (not tongue weight) is available from your manufacturer. Unfortunately you are likely to run into trailer salesmen who will say something like "Oh yeah, you can tow this with your truck. Sure. Easy." It ain't necessarily true.

All that said, we much prefer fifthwheels. We have a 30' Sunnybrook, which we tow with a 3/4 ton diesel pickup (Dodge Cummins).
