Last week there was a discussion on this forum involving the 4L60 trasmission.I need some help with a problem I"m having with my 94 gmc. When cold it shifts OK but as it warms up the 1-2 shift acts like it is trying to go from first directly into overdrive. If slight pressure is applied to the brake pedal it shifts correctly. The same is true with the 2-3 shift.Once it is in 3rd it will go into overdrive OK. Any advice or help greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what exactly you are calling "overdrive." By definition, "overdrive" is when the output of the transmission is turning faster than the input. From what you are describing, it sounds more like the lock-up converter is engaging early, not the overdrive. Slight pressure on the brake pedal keeps it from engaging because the brakelight switch is hooked to the lock-up converter solenoid. So, very often, when there is a lock-up converter problem, the vehicle will run better when you keep slight pressure on the brake pedal. Try unhooking the wiring harness to the converter and see what happens. On your vehicle, I'm not sure how easy that is to do since the shift-valve body is computer controlled. On some, you can just unplug the harness on the side of the trans. but with others, it's a bit more complicated. I've got the lock-up function unhooked on all my trucks - they run MUCH better where I live, since we have so many hills. Flatland would be a different story.

Does the throttle position sensor track smoothly through it's entire range? How many miles? Does this happen when loaded and unloaded? Does this happen when driven in D instead of OD? What does the oil look and smell like?

This GMC 2500 has 245000 miles on it but was shifting fine until the intake manifold gaskets were replaced. Now the engine RPM's drop from about 1500 to 500 on 1-2 and 2-3 shifts unless slight pressure is applied to the brake pedal in which case it shifts normally. Problem occurs in both O and D range. The fluid is clear red and does not smell burned.I did transmission work at a Pontiac dealership through the 60's but am out of touch with modern technology and terminology. Just thought I might give this problem a try myself.I have the service and unit repair manuals for this model.I see that what I'm mistakingly referring to as overdrive should be the TCC.

Could be the throttle position sensor, an air leak , a whacked manifold pressure sensor. As previously stated those brake switches do fail after a few years as well. At those miles you are on borrowed time. Anything that still works is a gift. I've always found the altered TCC timing from after market programing chips gives much superior lock timing. The towing shift kits never did any harm.

Just had same problem fixed on 98 GMC. Trans shop pulled 0748 code out of computer, pressure control solenoid-electrical malfunction. Trans shop replaced internal electrical harness and internal electronics,ie. TCC solenoid,TCC control Solenoid, Pressure control Solenoid etc. 7 items from what i can tell. Just fixed today, runs normal. Have to wait and see if it stays that way. Is in car procedure and took about 3-4 hours. Hope info helps
