I would check with local backyard mower repairman. most have a large stock of junk riding mowers, and when they send them to the scrapyard, most still have the transaxle attached. And don't just look at MTD mowers for that axle.

Is there enough room & clearance to put a bored sleeve over both pieces & then weld the ends ??? Just a thought ..... .

Hi Dean,

Not knowing more info, shaft size and location of break, Davis has a good idea.

If trying to butt joint weld, I would probably would grind both sides to a "V" blunt point then aneal both pieces (heat dull red then let air cool) then use a piece of angle iron for a holding jig, then weld, then let cool (removes stress), then reheat to 500º and quinch in oil(adds temper).

As long as you keep the weld clean (remove all slag) between each pass then stick welding would not be a problem. A 3/32" electrode size would work best using higher than normal amperage as I'm betting your in the 1/2" to 5/8" shaft size.

If you know someone with a lathe have them face off the damaged section. Drill / ream (or bore) a hole in each end and press a rod connecting both parts. Bevel the damage area and arc weld. Turn the weld clean on the lathe and straighten. I have used this process to weld and repair crankshafts.

Hey Paul, send some of that rain on through to PA will ya? The governor must have passed an ordinance against rain. Everything gets to the border and breaks up. We could use some water.

Possibly, but it has to be straight, else you will probably do more harm than good. I would opt for a different axle.

Dean,

I would try to obtain a new shaft. They are quite common. Failing that, I would try to TIG weld it. but keep in mind, there is a LOT of force on that puppy. Bevel cut it so you get good penetration. Dont forget there are axle seals there too so TIG it and maybe it will keep them from melting. They are mild steel so it should be easy to weld.
