I have a new front loading dryer that I have attached a 3" dia. vent instead of the usual 4". Are there going to be problems in the future with this kind of set up? I need some advise before I closed up the wall. BTW, 4" is not an option due to space limitation. Thanks.

I just did that job, in a 2x3 studded wall, used a 4" pipe and squished it oval to just fit in ! screwed and taped the seems nicely.

Check your local home center for a dryer "snorkle". This is a rectangular duct that has a round transition on both ends. Great for getting a dryer closer to the wall or transitioning the 4" round to something that would nest between the studs. Use foil backed tape to seal the joints when you get it into the end position. Get yourself on a plan to regularly clean the duct to avoid risk of fire.

Hi Gandda,

You've been given some excellant advice that you should take.

Sometimes a dryer vent will smolder for several hours before it catchs fire.

Never cheat the vent on any heating appliance with either too large or too small of vent. To large of vent will not vent the lint from the fan or vent pipe. Too small of vent will cause the controls to cycle on the high limit switch and can cause a fire.

I would use 5" oval duct in the wall . This is for 2x walls

Lint build up in dryer exhaust may cause a fire. A house burned down in my area due to this problem.

I tried the same thing. In a few months my dryer stopped working due to lint backing up all the way to the top of the dryer. Moved the dryer to an outside location where the proper hose could hook up and it's worked fine ever since. So I'd advise against doing it.

Squish it! in reply to gandda, 05-09-2005 11:24:54
Your dryer will like a 4-inch pipe squished a little into an oval than it would like a 3-inch pipe.

Whether or not restricting the vent hurts your new dryer, it will hurt your checkbook, from increased energy use. The dryer exhaust needs to flow freely to carry away the moisture so the clothes will dry as quickly as possible.

The future is the first load. If its long it will cause excess back pressure and overheat the dryer. Then it will pack up with lint a lot faster. I suppose you used a slinky hose too that has a lot more restriction.

Go to 4" aluminum or galvanized pipe, it takes up less space and flows better and doesn't gather lint so fast.

Dunno, I would stick with whatever is recommended by the manufacture. Restriction might cause over heating. What are the limitations, surely you can work around that somehow. I have seen them run out the wall, under the floor and thru the wall. Saw one run into an attached garage, but that was a terrible big mistake.
