how long are corn seeds good for??

i just got finished planting a small area of sweet corn. i have some seed left over. will it still be good to plant next year?

Fresh seed should be good for a few years, although germination rate may diminish slightly, depending on storage conditions. To do a germ test- count out 100 seeds. Put them in a pan on top of a moist cloth. Put another moist cloth on top. Keep it in a warm place, or under a light. Keep it moist- not wet. After a week, do a daily check- raise the top cloth and count germinated seeds. Total count is your germination rate.

As half american indian, I found some ancient indian corn seed in my grandmothers things after she passed on in 1978. She had it in an old mason jar with a lid on it. Anyway, about 15 years ago, I decided to see if some of it would grow in the garden and I planted about 30 seeds of various colors. To my surprise, they grew but they were short. They produced a good crop and they were also insect resistant, not one worm. I dried a bunch and put the seeds back in the jar.

The moral of the story is, there is no telling how old them seeds are and they still produced a good crop. We ate them but they tasted chalky and were rather tough.

2-3 years. Here is what I do, seal in a Qt Jar and put in refrigerator.

Grain seeds sprouted and grew when planted after they were uncovered in the great pyramids of Egypt.

They were dormant for 4,000 years or somptin' like that. :>)

Two years is fine, you could probably go three, but will lose some germination. Three years or more you should increase the planting rate.

thanks for the replies. ill have plenty left over for next years plant. this is my first time growing corn. i grew up on a 200 acre farm in south east michigan. but i was to young to remember much on farming. we moved when i was 10yrs old. i never missed a ride on that old farmall tractor or combine. but it felt good to turn some soil over again. i really miss that old farm. i am 33yrs old and i now i live on 5 acres in the middle of the city. the condos next door must love me and all my tractors..haha...too bad for them
