The Ruger Mark 2 is the best I've found, money wise, to make good snakes outta bad ones.

Years ago we had a pipeline crew from down south putting in substantial amount of underground pipes in this area - (gas field). After that, we didn"t see many rattle snakes for several years. Seems the ones those guys found went back to camp and were the "Guest of Honor" at dinner that nite.

There's an old story..... probably urban legend..... about the golfer who kills huge rattler late in the afternoon on the golf course; tells his friends in the club house about it; decides it would be "neat" to have the rattles; goes back out onto the course in the dark; has trouble finding the snake, but finally finds it and cuts off rattles. When playing a round the next day, there's his snake with rattles intact; never found the one he cut rattles off of; had to have been a live one..... ...

I guess it's that time of the year. Need to get my traps out and start killing the little buggers. Wouldn't bother me so much, but I have two little boys that don't need copperheads around. Killed 11 in the three years we have owned the land.

Execution tool of choice is a 5 foot shovel. Takes the head off, then you can scoop 'em up to dispose of 'em.

I like the long range of the 44 mag you never know where the copperheads friend is when you kill one, most of the time if you find one theres another one close. Plus when I killed that one yesterday I was plowing a little ground for a wildlife plot so I just plow it in the ground

The last rattler that I killed, I used my garden hoe and took it's head off. I save my ammo for the bigger coyotes and prowlers.

I load every other cylinder in my 44 with snake shot and the others with a 245 grain soft point lead bullet that way I'm ready for either one

Always heard to leave black snakes alone because they will kill the other poisones snakes. I thought it was just an "old wives tale" til a few years back when I saw it happening with my own eyes. Laying out by my wood pile I found a black snake, about an inch in diameter and about three feet long, that had caught a copperhead a little fatter but nearly the same length. The black snake had coiled around the copperhead and crushed it and by the time I found them it was in the process of eating it. Never would have believed it if I hadn't seen it.----- ---Saw my first black snake of the year last weekend down by the shop, and was glad of it....

The only black snakes I kill are the ones I find in the chicken house and even then I will catch them and move them off a mile or so but if I find the same one again it has a disagreement with the 44 but not many have that problem

Hi Wayne,

We have red, black and yellow bull snakes here that keep the kangaroo rats under control. The kangaroo rats will kill a rattle snake but not a bull snake.

Marty Stoufer(sp) on TV showed a kangaroo rat bouncing up and down in front of rattler letting the snake strike at the krat then the krat hops behind the snakes head and sinks in two fangs into the snakes nerve system kiling it.

The krat has long fur so the rattler keeps missing the meat of the krat when it strikes. Once the krat has most of the vennom out of the rattler then does it proceed to kill it.

Keep in mind that a kangaroo rat has a body about 3" long with a 6" long tail. Was just amazing to watch this happen as I would have never believed it.

A kangaroo rat is so named as it looks just like a big kangaroo in Au.

When I was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX, there was plenty of them, rattlers, and scorpians. Once when I was trudgin through the brush, heard something rustling around in some tall grass, so strolled through it to see what it was. Was a copperhead that made the mistake of slithering over a large nest of fire ants, and the more that it fought, the faster they poured out of a hole about the size of a quarter and were all over it. I left and came back about 5 minutes later (tops), and there was almost nothing left of that copperhead - nothing. Was about 50' from the tent, so I didn't lose any sleep over it's fate.

Thanks for takin care of that one too. Now that I think of it, probably won't lose any sleep over the fate of the one you got. Better not let PETA find out though. LOL.

Mark

old, I do whole-heartedly agree that a 44 mag will do the job, and quite well!! But it seems to me that it is quite a bit of over-kill, Useing the 44. Even it you don't hit the snake the concusion will kill it. I found a shot gun of any size you choose works very well, But I prefer a long handle #1 irrigation shovel. I have used in on more smakes than I can count. Have Never Had a Snake Take It Away From Me Yet!. At best a snake can only strike up to 1/2 its length. most copperheads ave about 20 in long so about 1 ft is max striking distance.
Anyway, each to his own devises,LOL.
Later,
John A.

A Smith/Wesson model 36 (Chief's Special) is very compact and does not much get in the way while riding a tractor. The 147 grain wadcutters are very mild load. They are deadly on rats and snakes. I manage to hit them about half the time.
