homemade dye to find water leak

i need to find a leak in a 300ft section of water line from a cistern to house,there is several damp places and it would be nice to find the leak the first attemp or two. Anyone have ideas for homemade dye..... .that isn't toxic.

Use a 5ft long piece of 2" pvc pipe with a styrofoam
cup on top. Tape a stethoscope to the bottom of the cup. On a quiet day you can hear a small leak from 50ft away and be able to pinpoint it when you get on top of the leak.

One time when we couldn't find the end of a drain pipe we poured a couple gallons of heavy cream in. Showed right up, easy to find.

Hi Coup,

I would shut the ball valves off on the main line then install an air schrader fitting (tire valve stem, 9/16" hole?) in a pipe end cap plus a gauge and use air pressure to pop the hole larger so it will come to the surface.

Sure...supermarket...food coloring. It's concentrated and will show like crasy.....Pick a color that will contrast to the surface.
