I just got this gasket cutter. The last one I used came with a cutting board made of a piece of particle board with a resiliant pad on it and a socket for the center pin. This one has no cutting board. Have any of you made one and what did you use? Also the center pivot pin has an end that looks as if it could be driven in but I am concerned that it would be a challenge to pull back out if I drove it into a piece of wood! Was that the intent and you just replace the pin if you bend or break it or am I missing the concept here?

Chris, Worked in steam plants for 45 yrs. Any sheet of smooth plywood at least a 1/2' thick and size as large as you might eventually need. You can take any 1/2" or larger diameter steel pin and drill a hole dead center of it the size of your pivot pin. Then drill a hole in the center of the plywood that will give the steel pin a tight fit. Cut the steel pin off to fit flush across the surface of the plywood and push it into place. Start making gaskets. Try and make your cutter adjustment to just barely make it through the gasket material you are using and the board will last longer, giving you a smoother cut thru the material. When you are done with it be sure to adjust the cutter so it is not protruding out to cut you when you reach in the box to pick it up at a later date. There are plastic materials that would be better than the plywood but can be pretty expensive. You could pick some of it up in hobby shops, hardware stores etc. HTH

Buy your wife/girlfriend a new 1/2 thick white plastic cutting board. She'll be happy and you get to use the old one to cut gaskets. They are somewhat self healing and work good. If you need to drill holes for pins, make test fits in the corners.

That should be 1/2" thick board.
