I am trying to get into buying scrap metals, found some scrap listed as copper alloy QQ-C-390 Alloy 934, and also describes it as 2-Type and 3-Type. Has a manufacturers code as 81348, what I am trying to find out, of course is what I can sell it as. My understanding is that an alloy is two or more types of metal, so finally the question- Where can I look to get info to clue me into the different types of metals and their compositions and/or codes??? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You, Muffy

Scrap prices are posted in The Wall Street Journal.Scrap metal business is subject to "mob tax" if you get big enough.Number one copper is presently over a dollar a pound. Its less for most alloys.

Another word for "copper alloy" is "bronze".

In this particular case, QQ-C-390 Alloy 934 is "high leaded tin bronze" consisting of 84% copper, 8% lead and 8% tin and is typically used for bushing and bearings, according to the chart below.

The five-digit manufacturer's code is called a "CAGE" code (Corporate and Government Entity). A lookup on CAGEC 81348 reports the "company name" as:

FEDERAL SPECIFICATIONS
PROMULGATED BY GENERAL SERVICES
ADMINISTRATION WASHINGTON DC

So the "manufacturer's code" is not really the manufacturer at all. It just tells you that the number is a federal spec number, rather than a manufacturer's part number. This is not unusual; many standard parts like fasteners are listed the same way.

As for what it's worth, I have no idea.

Hi Muffy,

Your asking the wrong person on this one. What little info I had in my head is long gone as I never tried to keep that stuff in there and would look it up as needed. One of the machinests here on the forum would be a greater help than I.

About the only thing I can add, it appears to be a military spec CU grade.

Below are a couple websites that may help.
